INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this study was to trace the historical development of the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School from its inception in 1852 to 1983. Several major problems were encountered, as efforts were made to use material only from records that were historically accountable. Materials available for research varied from repetitive accounts of certain time spans to scarcely anything for other periods of time. Records were sometimes sketchy and frequently incomplete. Differences in recording style and technique of school administrators as well as other resource people, were often evidenced. Also, there were frequent discrepancies in factual matter which should be accredited to the particular source of the material. Along with the information gained through printed matter, the study was facilitated by the sharing of pertinent recollections by former students and staff. Time limitation and the inability to make more contacts resulted in minimal personal interviews. Any oversights were totally unintentional. The approach to the study was entirely positive, striving to fulfill the need for an authentic, comprehensive, updated history of the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School.
